2020 LAS Awards

Outstanding Undergraduate Student
Meg is a passionate student researcher, accomplished athlete, and Biology major in her senior year at UCCS. She started working in Dr. Olesnicky Killian’s genetics lab in spring 2018, performing experiments in developmental neurobiology using the model organism Drosophila melanogaster, or the common fruit fly. Having a genetics professor for a mother, her interest in Biology and work with the fruit fly goes way back to childhood. Meg is also minoring in Anthropology and has worked in Dr. Robin’s Biological Anthropology lab, conducting interviews and analyzing human fecal samples. In the summer of 2018 she spent six weeks in Peru conducting similar Anthropological research. She has presented her research at local, regional, and national conferences, receiving several scholarships and travel awards for her work, including the LAS Scholar's Award and the Fred Zaebst Memorial Scholarship. Meg is also a member of the Undergraduate Research Academy and runs on the women’s track and cross country teams. She has contributed to the winning of two conference championships in track and scored at the national level in cross country. Meg hopes to pursue a PhD and continue doing research in the field of neurobiology.
Outstanding Graduate Student

Erica Tourula will graduate with a M.Sc. in Biology with a concentration in Exercise Science. She received a BSc in Applied Exercise Science from the University of New England and an MS in Exercise Science (Honors) from Northeastern University prior to attending UCCS. During her graduate studies, Erica worked under the advisement of Dr. James Pearson investigating the influence of facial fanning upon cardiovascular control during a simulated hemorrhagic challenge in exercise and heat stressed humans. Erica has a passion for research and after graduation she plans to study for a Ph.D with a focus upon exercise and environmental physiology.
