Mathematics, BS

Mathematics is a dynamic field of study, which is constantly evolving in response to external challenges coming from applications and internal challenges coming from unsolved problems. It plays a central role in science and engineering, and a key supporting role in economics, business, and government.

Students who are analytical by nature, who enjoy thinking critically, and who appreciate a deep understanding of what they study may find mathematics attractive, stimulating, and challenging.

The Department of Mathematics offers a curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics of Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with Secondary Education Emphasis. This degree is well-suited for students aiming toward a variety of mathematical careers in industry or secondary education, or planning for graduate education.

The Bachelor of Science (BS) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Mathematics requires the following:

• A minimum of 46 credit hours of MATH coursework (45 for BA). At least 31 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher)
• A grade of C or better in courses applied to the major
• A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all MATH coursework
• No more than 60 credit hours of MATH coursework may apply to the bachelor’s degree
• Fulfill the specific requirements for the Option selected
• An Exit Interview with the Mathematics department is required prior to graduation
• All Mathematics majors are required to meet with a faculty advisor in the Mathematics department during their first year as Mathematics majors

Following the core courses, each student then completes the requirements for their selected options:

• Applied Mathematics
• Statistics
• Secondary Teaching
• Flexible
