About the Program
The Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics with a Secondary Education emphasis provides students with a strong foundation in mathematical concepts and problem-solving techniques, while also preparing them to become effective educators at the middle and high school levels. This program blends rigorous coursework in algebra, calculus, geometry, and statistics with educational theory, classroom management skills, and instructional strategies. Graduates are equipped with both the content knowledge and pedagogical expertise needed to inspire and teach the next generation of mathematicians, empowering students to succeed in an increasingly complex and data-driven world.
The secondary education option is designed for students wishing to be high school mathematics teachers. It requires a minimum of 45 credit hours (27 upper division) in mathematics as well as an additional 30 hours of UCCS Teach courses.
Focus of Study
The Department of Mathematics offers a comprehensive curriculum leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics with an emphasis in Secondary Education for students intending to teach middle or high school.
Program Requirements
The Bachelor of Science (BA) in Mathematics requires the following:
- A minimum of 45 credit hours of MATH coursework. At least 31 of those hours must be upper division (courses numbered 3000 or higher)
- A grade of C or better in courses applied to the major
- A minimum 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all MATH coursework
- No more than 60 credit hours of MATH coursework may apply to the bachelor’s degree
- Fulfill the specific requirements for the Option selected
- An Exit Interview with the Mathematics department is required prior to graduation
- All Mathematics majors are required to meet with a faculty advisor in the Mathematics department during their first year as Mathematics majors
